Learning Through Play

Our program is designed to allow children to choose from activities including arts and crafts, nature studies, science, reading, games, and sports. Recreation periods are scheduled on the playground or in the gym. We believe children learn best by playing—SED is the "neighborhood" of Sudbury, a place for children to have fun after school, play, socialize, participate as they are interested, and have new experiences.

Arts & Crafts

Creative expression through hands-on projects and artistic activities.

Nature & Science

Exploration of the natural world and scientific concepts.

Sports & Games

Gym games, outdoor play, and physical activities.

Reading & Quiet Time

Spaces for reading, homework, and quiet activities.

Free Play

Unstructured time for children to socialize and follow their interests.

Outdoor Play

Daily outdoor time for physical activity and connection with nature (weather permitting).

Special Programs

Early Release Wednesdays (ILAP)

SED provides coverage for all 19 Early Release Wednesdays throughout the school year – including the last day of school – for families who have Wednesdays included in their schedule. We plan a variety of onsite theme days and field trips over the course of the year. The cost of these days is included in tuition for families enrolled for Wednesday care.

Each location distributes a monthly newsletter that contains an activities calendar, a snack calendar and important information about planned activities and field trips for the upcoming month.

SED offers full-day programs on select school holidays and vacation weeks. Programs are held at Haynes Elementary School and are open to all currently enrolled K-8 students.

Typical dates include:

  • Rosh Hashanah (if on a school day)

  • Yom Kippur (if on a school day)
